Strathmore North Primary School

2024 | Strathmore, Victoria | Education

Strathmore North Primary School is an existing school established in 1944 and located in Wurundjeri Country.

The vision for the project created two narrative concepts “A Vibrant Eco-System” that was derived from the schools’ proximity to natural environment and “The Artists Palette” that was created from the school’s dedication to student artwork. The proposed design included the demolition of the existing separate art, library and relocatable buildings, replaced with a new Learning Community Building and central landscaping that provides a greater connection to the other existing buildings.

The scale and positioning of the building maximises connection between library and outdoor learning whilst provides a symbolic and visual link to the neighbouring Moonee Ponds Creek. The proposed western verandah provides sheltered outdoor learning areas, with playful dappled lighting created by perforated sun shading to softens the transition from internal to external.

The interior spaces have been carefully considered with 5 GPC’s and an arts space directly connecting to the library space with secondary supporting spaces that offer opportunities for small group learning. These flexible spaces have ample natural light and internal glazing to encourage connection between cohorts.

The exterior façade is proposed to extend the exiting Memory Art Trail, with strategic brick patterning echoing both the existing student artworks and natural surrounds.
