St. Patrick’s Catholic Primary School

2024 | Murrumbeena, Victoria | Education

St. Patrick’s Primary School in Murrumbeena is a Catholic institution focused on providing faith-based education for primary school students.

The school’s vision emphasises engaged and motivated learning, grounded in faith. The campus includes a large brick hall, a relocatable building for kindergarten students, a church, and several outdoor play and learning areas. As the school population grew, the planning process began with workshops involving students, staff, and the wider community.

These discussions identified the need for interconnected spaces, including stronger links between indoor and outdoor areas and classrooms and parish buildings. The concept of “interlink” emerged from these discussions, influencing the architectural, interior, and landscape design.

The design process also involved analysing different learning environments and configurations. These spatial arrangements were tailored to enhance both teaching and learning experiences, particularly in the junior wing. K2LD used spatial diagrams during the early design stages to assist decision-making and communicate how the spaces would function.

They presented various learning spaces such as gallery spaces for sharing work, cave spaces for quiet study, campfire spaces for group work, waterholes for collaboration, and mountain top spaces for larger presentations. These varied settings ensured that the physical spaces supported different learning activities.

The design also aimed to create spaces that encouraged community interaction, strengthening connections between the school and the parish. Detailed design requirements were captured to ensure the final spaces met the needs of the students and staff, fostering a sense of unity within the school. The collaborative approach, which involved input from the entire school community, resulted in a design that fulfilled the school’s educational, community, and spiritual objectives.
