A modern homage to built heritage

Image

With its prominent location at the intersection of Queen and Flinders Street, and elevated upon the existing 1872-built Fletcher Jones building, we thought only the symbol of a crown would befit One Queen, a new 25 storey residential tower proposed to be raised upon—while preserving—the heritage building at its base.

The historic site is thus given an architectural coronation: the new tower, a glass body of abstracted facets, stands resplendent—now sheer and now coloured opaque, jewel-like in catching light and attention. In both height and style, One Queen stands with a commanding presence. But it is also sensitive.

At the pedestrian level, a series of forms in timeless copper and bronze mediates the passage from the restored heritage building to the modern glass addition. One Queen is a landmark in many ways—redefining not only Melbourne’s southern skyline, but how new can be in concert with old.
