A reimagined swingset pavilion

Image

Every year, the NGV Architecture Commission seeks a work of temporary architecture to activate its Grollo Equiset Garden, a venue best enjoyed in the warmer months, when it becomes a lovely backdrop for a lunch or stroll.

Wondering if the garden could offer other forms of alfresco delight, we proposed to install a swing set-one of the oldest forms of garden furniture, but reimagined at a more architectural, playful scale.

Grollo Equiset’s sculptures that reference ideas of drapery, and the stained glass ceiling of NGV’s Great Hall inspired our design of a colourful fabric swing pavilion. It is a kinetic sculpture in its own right, with cradles that tauten and slacken, and a fabric canopy that responds by swelling or loosening, and always asking for the cooperation of a crowd to give its fullest, voluminous form.
