Golden Square Primary School unites two existing school communities with a design that offers a dynamic and engaging environment for flexible teaching.

A highly consultative process allowed us to create a new School that not only met the functional brief, but also united both community identities. The new campus celebrates the proud histories of the merged schools, yet firmly looks forward into their bright collective future.

Inspired by student sketches, the idea of the “Tree House” was born. A playful and energetic story to rally the students, this design narrative accommodates for the need to minimise our building footprint on the constrained site.

A double-storey configuration, each level forms distinct aspects of the Tree House – both ‘trunk’ and ‘canopy’ levels brought to life by the colour and materiality. The unique spaces give the students their own sense of identity and ownership, both in and out of the classroom.

  • Breaking down the scale of the Tree, playful cubbies and low windows connect to the physical outdoor tree canopies and surrounding play areas. This lively environment continues outdoors; saw log paths, decked platforms and a tree-lined boulevard create a world where the children can really connect with the environment.

  • Not only do we hope to create an engaging space for students and teachers alike, but the more informal setting aims to accommodate for more progressive teaching styles – where we can cater for the varying needs of the students and staff.
