In the case of Aspendale Gardens Primary School, our response was inspired by the School’s most precious asset – the beloved Vegetable Garden.

Beginning with a series of vibrant Visioning Workshops, we kicked off the design process by providing sessions that were pivotal in uniting the community.

The Garden would come to embody the community’s values and aspirations for the new school – nurturing and pedagogy, exploratory learning opportunities and indoor-outdoor connections.

Through the demolition of all internal corridors, under-utilised space was transformed into a multi-functional Collaborative Centre for each learning community. Catering to the vast and varying learning abilities of the children, the design outcome eschews traditional classroom layouts, instead creating a space that can be sculpted and moulded for and by the children.

The intervention is also universally accessible, allowing children with all physical abilities to engage. Teachers are then able to operate as facilitators with increased independence and focus on student centred learning.

A garden aesthetic is brought to life, suspended acoustic clouds providing students a sense of wonderment and connection to the outdoors despite being imbedded in the heart of the plan. The voice of the students called for a colour palette reflective of what could be found in the garden; this being contemplative, cosy and calm with elements of “the Wild”.
