Patagonia Haus

2026 | Singapore | Residential

Set within the long-time home of an elderly couple, the renovation transforms the residence into a calm, elegant, and deeply personal environment that reflects both their way of life and their appreciation for contemporary Chinese painting.

Rather than pursuing a dramatic reinvention, the design takes a more nuanced approach—one that respects the rhythms of daily life, memory, and familiarity, while introducing renewed spatial clarity and material richness suited to this next chapter of living.

The result is a home that feels gentle yet refined, where everyday routines are supported by spaces that are thoughtfully composed, emotionally resonant, and quietly expressive.

At the heart of the design is Patagonia stone, chosen as the project’s defining material language. More than a visually striking material, it carries a painterly quality that deeply resonated with the homeowners. The selection of each stone slab was specially curated by them, reflecting a personal and intuitive connection to its veining, tonal depth, and layered composition.

A key aspect of the design lies in the use of different finishes of Patagonia stone throughout the home. This allows the same material family to take on different expressions depending on its setting. In the entry, the stone is presented as a strong visual focal point, almost like a framed artwork marking the arrival axis. In the living and dining spaces, it forms a textured backdrop that brings depth and visual calm to the shared areas.

Complementing this palette is a carefully orchestrated interplay of straight and curved profiles that flow throughout the residence. Straight lines establish order and clarity, framing the architecture, cabinetry, and thresholds with a sense of calm precision. In contrast, curved forms soften the spatial experience, guiding movement and perception from one room to the next.

At areas with lower ceiling heights, timber-clad ceilings are introduced to create warmth and provide visual linkage between adjoining spaces. In areas with higher ceilings, the design celebrates volume through gentle ceiling curvature, where the profile helps sculpt and diffuse light. This reduces glare, softens the atmosphere, and lends the home a more serene and enveloping character.

This was especially meaningful as the lady of the house enjoys painting in her leisure time, making the material feel not only aesthetically aligned with the couple’s interests, but also personally symbolic. Reminiscent of contemporary Chinese ink paintings, the stone evokes abstract landscapes—expressive yet balanced, bold yet contemplative. In this home, Patagonia stone is not treated simply as a finish, but as a narrative element that introduces an artistic presence into daily life.

In more intimate rooms such as the powder room, the stone is interpreted in a quieter and more tactile manner, creating moments of refinement without overwhelming the space. Through this careful variation, the material remains cohesive yet never monotonous.

Together, these material and spatial strategies create an interior that is composed, fluid, and deeply livable. Through the curated use of Patagonia stone, the layering of finishes, and the balance of curved and linear forms, the home becomes a quiet canvas for daily life—one that reflects the couple’s artistic sensibilities, honours their long relationship with the space.
